Raoul Hausman
Raoul Hausman was an Austrian artist and writer. He was a key figure in Berlins Dadaism. His experimental photographic collages would go on to become profound influences in Europe.
His collages were a tool of satire and political protest. Early in his career he was greatly influenced by German expressionis. He also was influenced by Hannah Hach, Otto Gross and Franz Jung
Raoul then began to interpret his early work into his photography. The work he created was greatly influence by the surrealism era. His photographs still possess style of his photocollages.
The photomontage became the technique most associated with Berlin Dada, was used extensively by Hausmann, Höch, Heartfield, Baader and others within the Berlin Dada.
At the same time, Hausmann started to experiment with sound poems he called phonemes and poster poems, originally created by the chance lining up of letters by a printer without Hausmann's direct intervention. |
Raoul Hausmann's work only appeared to me after I had created my own photomontage. I researched his work and found that what I created look very similar to his style of photomontage. In my work I used some famous people, political messages and historical scenes; which is something that Hausmann similarly did in his work. I was surprised how similar the work was to his, it made me realise how expressive I was in my photomontage. This made me think about trying something similar for another photomontage piece or to do it for photography in general.
